I’m still not sure what all these characters are called, but I’m certain that I am officially in love with the New Mutants as a series. It’s a relief, because outside of Amazing Spider-Man, I’ve wanted to read something by Zeb Wells that I find entertaining and enjoyable rather than bland and samey. This series is wacky, sometimes violent fun, and this issue starts an arc, while effectively wrapping up another; the New Mutants have been separated from one another, and the X-Men turn up to help them. It’s simple enough, but there’s a lot of strangeness in this issue that only furthers my interest; the potential resolutions that will come from answers next issue are enough to keep me thoroughly engaged, as this feels far more complicated than the previous arc. The artwork by Leonard Kirk remains the highlight, meanwhile, holding on to the standard established in his prior work and making each character distinctive and recognizable, even if I can’t remember their names. The ending of the issue appears ominous and should offer some interesting developments next time around, but for now this is a great issue for those who read the last arc of the title, but probably not a good jumping on point for new readers.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
