Exiles was the series that brought me into comics, so I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this book. When Claremont took over and got rid of most of the characters that I had come to love and for me represented the book, I was bitter. Now after his first story-arc on the relaunch is over and can say I am starting to warm up to his version a little, but I still have some issues with his style.
First the good, I really like how he has developed this reality, and made some interesting changes to this universe. I am a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, and in some ways this resembles that. A meteor storm had ravaged the earth in the past. The planet has recovered some, but the President has abandoned the planet to live on the moon. The moon and nearby planets have been colonized, and the Black Panther has sealed off the planet and claimed it for her own. I also like how the Exiles left the universe in this situation, which leaves room for a later story where they revisit this world. I also have come to like Mystiq, and I am really curious to learn his complete backstory.
Now for the bad, the dialog. During the beginning fight scene there is repeated cases of lines like this "I am ______, and I am going to do ______ to you." All the exposition is in the dialog, and so is what should be a character's inner-monologue. Claremont's dialog is the main issue that keeps this issue from being great.
The art is awesome. Grummett draws in a way that is really engaging. His battle scenes are engaging and really show a flow of action, which is what makes the dialog that explains every last action so frustrating. If its drawn this well, I don't need to be told about it. Even the scenesĀ with little or no action are drawn in an engaging way that holds the readers interest.
This series has overcome many of my initial problems, which mostly stemmed from unhappiness over change. It still has some work to do, but Claremont has crafted a new form of the Exiles that is still engaging, and fulfills its mission of exploring the Marvel Omniverse. Just please bring back Blink.
