What a disappointment. I was looking forward to the return of Mockingbird. I loved West Coast Avengers as a kid, and the return of Bobbi Morse and the promise of an increased focus on Clint Barton (still feels weird to call him Ronin) seemed can't miss. But miss it did. The art by David Lopez was average at best. While the action sequences are OK, the parts of the story that would benefit from an artist that can draw characters acting suffer greatly. Particularly awful are panels that flashback to Bobbi's incarceration by the Skrulls. Instead of being scary or even just darker in tone, they come off comical with Lopez's strangely cartoonish art. The real disappointment is the writing. I've enjoyed McCann in every interview and panel in which I've heard him, and his passion for these characters is truly unquestionable. He seemed so genuinely excited to write this story, that I actually felt sorry for him that I didn't like it. The interaction between Bucky/Cap and Clint was particularly amateurish, like bad fan fic. On a bright note, the Jo Chen cover with the classic Hawkeye and Mockingbird is amazing. That's (almost) worth the price of $3.99 alone, it's that stunning. Unfortunately, I've already ordered issues #2 and 3. Maybe it'll get better as McCann finds his legs.
