So, I can’t say I’m a big Luke Cage fan or a John Arcudi fan either. This book’s draw for me was completely all about the artwork of Eric Canete. His work seems to create pretty instant divisions between love and hate, but I think his is one of those unique styles in comics that adds more dynamism, storytelling, and character to any subject he draws–instantly recognizable.

Imagine my surprise as I opened the pages of New Avengers Luke Cage #2 to find NO ERIC CANETE. Marvel went out of their way I guess to try and find another artist to fill-in the first few pages which just happened to be a flashback. Ok, at some point Mr. Canete’s beautiful renderings should turn up–Ah, there they areā€¦for about FOUR PAGES. Than we get a nice wrap-up by said Mr. Fill-in (not taking the time to find his name).

I would expect something like this from DC because they are all about making the trains run on time, talent be damned. But I don’t care about Luke Cage (as I’ve stated), I care about the creators. It’s understandable that creators can fall into missing deadlines because things in life come up, but I would rather wait a year for issue #2 of full on Canete art than get my on-time, mostly fill-in issue that now completely taints my interest in this series. When I get duped into spending $4 on four pages of solid art and a story I could take or leave, it puts a bad taste in my mouth. I suppose from now on I’ll have to thumb through my comics judiciously before buying.

  1. Whoa, what? Fill-in artist? Canete couldn’t stay on track? I have to wonder wtf is up with him? His SDCC (I think) panel with Palo Riveria last year was all about being on time, your reputation is all you have blah blah blah. This was late, his End League stuff was way late. Personal problems? I can’t help but look at his 90-minute studies though and think his ability and style should translate to a decent page rate. What a bummer.

  2. Totally agree. I have less gripe with Canete as I do with Marvel for putting out a tepid second issue. It’s obviously some sort of last-minute deal, but I would rather wait for the full Canete than settling for next to no Canete.

I get that Marvel is probably just being dilligent in getting the book out on time, but Canete seems like a slight risk on art for a limited series about a mid-level Marvel character so why not see it through? Useless theorizing I know, but man, I was psyched for the art on this from the previews and issue #1.
