Another excellent New Avengers from Bendis. The art, as is the norm with Billy Tan unfortunately, is sub-standard; but is more than made up for by the great dialogue and story. My one gripe would be that after going through such a shit storm to give Spider-man his secret identity back all that work is undone in 2 pages. It was a great opportunity to get Spidey out of the Avengers (which I personally think is a good step, along with getting Wolverine out) which was passed up and all the work of BND was undone to an extent. Other than Wolverine and Spidey being in the book (which is my personal preference more than anything) I found it an excellent read and look forward to seeing how the story develops.

Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 1 - Poor

  1. Your rating seems to contradict your general statements

  2. Looking into his comics list, the reviewer gave this a 5 overall. But then in his review he mentions "sub-standard" art, and goes on to do nothing but list (well-founded) narrative problems. And yet this is supposedly an "excellent" issue? This reminds me of the ’90s, when many people (myself included) would swear by the X-titles, but whenever we actually had to dissect what was going on in any given issue…most of it was problematic. The above reviewer is just "look[ing] forward to seeing how the story develops"–which was always the case with ’90s X-titles. I wonder how much longer the DELUSION of Bendis’s contiuing mainstream "excellence" will continue…? Well, I bought a ton of bad books in the ’90s and didn’t realize they were substandard until years later, so…

  3. I realise that. However, I would clarify by saying that the story and dialogue are excellent (spider-man reveal not withstanding). Admitedly 5 stars was a bit much because the art really is sub-standard. I think given a chance to re rate the book I would give the story a 4 (not five because of the sider-man reveal) and the art a 2. Thank you both for pointing out the errors in my review. I will have to think it through a bit more in future!
