Why do good books go bad in the end? I picked this book up, initially, because I've always had a soft spot in my heart for golden-age pulp heroes. I like The Shadow. I like The Phantom. And I like these pulp-y characters, too. The Surgeon, The Revenant, all of 'em. The story was well written, the characters were unique and interesting and the art was gorgeous. Around issue 4, though, I knew things were starting to get hairy. The General isn't just a creepy looking weirdo who canoodles with demons, he's a werewolf, too? I'd like that little plot point to go back to left-field where it came from, please. The thing that really worried me, though, was the Lindbergh Baby kidnapping getting writtin into the story. I know the joke goes, "Too soon?", but for me, the tragedy of real people losing a child, even if it was 80 years ago, shouldn't be fodder for anyone's popular fiction. My fears were proved true when issue 5 revealed that the baby wasn't dead, after all, but was "rescued" by said demon on the condition that, "no one know about it". Maybe I'm too sensitive, but that just seems tasteless. Ad to this that no one's a fan of any final issue feeling rushed, which this issue clearly was, and overall I'd say Mr. Liss and company ultimatley come away with a 'fail'.
