This was a very good issue, Reed’s take on Carol Danvers has never been strong and more layered. The comparison of Carol to Battlestar Galatica’s Kara Thrace (Starbuck) really became clear to me in this issue.

Both are dedicated soldiers, both have a punch first/think later mentality, they both have very complicated personal lives in spite of themselves, both have a secret love for their best friend (Simon for Carol and Lee for Kara), both are off-and-on alcoholics, they are comfortable with their sexuality, both have major self-confidence issues, both are trying to live up to the impossible standard of legends (Adama for Kara, Mar-vel for Carol) and finally both are the most talented person in the room but do not live up to their potential.

All that is missing in Carol is a distain for authority (which could be come a reality after the screw-ups of the Initiative and Secret Invasion) and a religious complex.

This series has been one of my favorites for over two years now, and in my opinion Ms. Marvel is starting to live up to her potential.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Couldn’t agree more.  Well written review.

  2. Very nice review, hated the comic, though – we get it, Marvel, she’s tough. She even says ‘the hell?’ Twice.

Who says this isn’t the mighty Marvel age of torture porn?
