Picked this up because of the intriguing cover. The first issue of this series is deliberately disorienting. At first, that's a drawback. It seems obtuse, uninviting, and self-indulgent in the extreme. But, stay with it. The sense of disorientation is the condition of our POV character, and by the end of the issue we have arrived in his (or her?) state of being: lost, unsure, and in the middle of some really strange events. There's a risky dialogue technique employed where some characters' dialogue bubbles communicate with symbols and pictures instead of verbs and nouns. If I encountered this technique out of context, I'd call B.S. on it and dip a PRETENTIOUS stamp in bright red ink and imprint every page in disgust. But, it actually works. This visual dialect makes sense in this disoriented world. I'm intrigued, but I'm going to keep issue #2 on a short leash. I'll need something more coherent to grab onto to continue on.
