Fred Van Lente delivers a light-hearted yet intense superhero/zombie story that is at once accessible and at the same time well connected to long-term Marvel continuity.  He introduces numerous characters with an economy of words, using simple dialogue to explain who these characters are without excessive reflection on their individual histories.  A skillful job, and very entertaining.  Kev Walker’s pencils are a perfect compliment to the subject matter, with just the right dose of darkness and heavier line weights to capture the horror-story mood of the comic, while still having enough of a fine line to convey the feel of the superhero aspects.  A very nice piece of work and a great start to this mini-series.

And on an unrelated note, I also like the inclusion of the Hood at the end, which ties this series nicely back into mainstream continuity without requiring the reader to have an extensive Marvel background to understand what’s going on.
