For an intro issue, I think it does its job. It’s well-paced and sets everything up properly. I’m excited to see where the concept goes.

All that said, I was not very impressed by the art. Doyle’s art isn’t problematic in itself, but he frankly does a poor job of conveying action here. Some of his scenes are confusingly drawn as well.. they just don’t look natural. I only bumped it to a 2 because some of the more static scenes show off his skill. And the cover is really very good. But I hope the art improves next issue or it’s going to become a bit distracting.

  1. Whoops, Doyle is a woman. Shows what I know.

  2. I think I had a similar reaction to the art. I’ve enjoyed Ming Doyle’s work elsewhere, but in this case I found the action sequences lacking in dynamism. A lot of the athletic “poses” looked static and unnatural. I am a Brian Wood fan, though, and am willing to see this through (seeing as it’s a relatively short miniseries).

  3. I was looking forward to this because I’ve enjoyed Brian Wood’s work in the past, but I thought this was overly stylized and completely dull from a story and character perspective. The premise is interesting and has potential, but the execution is all wrong, and I agree with Winslow and slowwc regarding Doyle’s static art. It’s nice to look at but completely lacks any sense of motion and dynamism. For a comic about superpowers and volleyball, everyone seems so posed (and bored).

  4. I disagree about the concept, thought it was really boring and well worn territory. Agreed about the art though. This had a very Paul Pope look to me but lacking his dynamic abilities. Also, all the volleyball scenes had very strange proportions. the players looked way too close together and the net appeared to be three feet tall. I am a HUGE Brian Wood fan but overall this feel way short of this usual quality.
