“I clean up piles of shit for a living.”  This is the statement made by one of the books main characters, and perfectly summerizes what this book is all about.  Maintenance is a book that follows the tale of two janitors that work at a lab that designs weapons for super villains.  So far, it’s been one of the few ongoing series that I’ve looked foward to every month.  It’s a very funny book, and from this great concept, the creators have really created a quirky world filled with humor.

This book finds our heroes at the end of their first multi-issue story arc.  What usually is a series of one and dones has found it’s feet to tell a great story that actually calls back to a story thread dropped in one of the early issues of the series.  Without revealing too much, the past few issues have seen a team of heroes (two janitors, an undead cat, a caveman, and a man-shark) venture into the depths of space to save the office secretary.  See, I told you the book was wacky.  But from this wackiness comes these endearing and very funny characters and character moments.

The cartooning in the book is perfect for the mood.  The characters all have this distinct look, and have this sort of silliness about them that portrays the mood of many of the stories.  Also, Rodriguez has great comedic timing with his figures, often drawing a facial expression or body movement that only enhances humor on the page.

If you enjoy funny books, you should definitely give this a whirl.  There are two trades out that collect the first 6 issues and they’re only $10 bucks a piece.  You owe it to yourself to read this book, if only for some big laughs.
