If you’re not a writer, or a fan of reading stories about writing, I’m not sure you’ll find this crossover at all enjoyable.  I am a fan of stories about writing.  And, yet, I’m rapidly becoming bored of this storyline.  It’s too “writer vs. writer’s block” for me.  I get it, already.  I get it.

This issue was very draggy as the genres fought amongst themselves, Thorn battled Writer’s Block, and the Page sisters battled the genres.  All of which you knew if you read the last issue.  And that’s the problem, really.  Nothing of note happened until the last page.  And for that to happen you need stellar dialog, or fantastic art.  And while neither the art nor the dialog was bad, but it wasn’t strong enough to carry this book.  I suspect this has something to do with Willingham putting out four Fables books a month, plus a few other DC titles.  The more you take on the more diluted your writing gets.  Maybe he should write the next issue about that.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 3 - Good

  1. A well written review but I have to disagree. Although this crossover has been VERY slow I think this issue was one of the best of the story so far. At least something happened and with the death of Hansel and writer’s block maybe things will really start to move in the last three issues. I love Fables and hope it returns to its usual quality when this story is over. I never read Jack of Fables until this crossover and after reading so much with the Page Sisters and being reminded how annoying Jack is I’m not sure I ever will. By the way what are the four Fable books each month, I only count three, Fables, Jack of Fables, and the Literals.

  2. @USPUNX: There are only three titles in the Fables world, but there has been an issue of the crossover put out every week since it started, so, four issues a month.

  3. Gotcha. At least that means this crossover will be done quicker…

  4. Very true.
