I pulled this book because I love a superhero book written by JM Dematteis.  Really liked his Spectacular Spiderman run with Sal Buscema and adore the JLI/Bwah-ha-ha stuff.  I've read that this book was what would have happened if he'd been able to finish his Captain AMerica storyline a couple of decades ago, which I haven't read.  I see the parallels with the characters, as Savior 28 is a patriotic hero created in a time of war, although instead of wimpy patriot Steve Rogers, here we have an alcoholic, cynical war veteran.  There are the seeds of a good story here.  Savior's story mirrors the US's story during the 20th century in the sense that he was born around 1900 and his character changes seemingly with the mood of the country.  Unfortunately, I also get the sense of deja vu.  It's also a story done before, not just in Captain America.  There's elements of Watchmen, a dash of Warren Ellis (Jenny Sparks, spirit of the 20th C for a start) along with a pinch of any number of other deconstructions of superheroes of the past 20 years.  It's also too wordy by half.

All that said, I'll keep going with it.  For a start there's a compelling twist at the end, which kind of pulls the rug out from the story you've read so far.  Also, no matter how often I've seen it, it is the kind of story that interests me.  I'm just not that sure that there are that many of us who want to read it again.
