Although I have enjoyed this mini-series, I have felt a lack of connection to these characters. Before this series I had only ever encountered Knight and Squire in Grant Morrison’s Batman books where they made very brief supporting turns. The characters were pretty much blank slates to me. While the previous three issues of this series were often very funny and definitely strange, I didn’t feel like I knew much more about these people than I did before.

That problem was solved with this issue. By narrowing the focus of the story to an adventure at the castle, Paul Cornell was really able to explore Cyril and Beryl as people. The stakes of the story may be lower than previous issues where the fate of England and the world was at risk, but the emotional stakes were much higher for both characters. The back story of how they met was sorely needed and did not disappoint. Now we finally know what they mean to each other and why they’re partnership is so important.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
