I’ve got to say that this issue, while pretty good, makes me a little worried about the future of this comic.  I feel like I’m a little biased against liking this comic because I typically don’t much care for Mark Millar’s writing.  I usually find his characters to be cynical bastards.  All of them.  If they’re not cynical bastards they’re played as fools.  I could feel this issue slipping down the slope of making the lead character into a fool, that his interest in doing the decent thing only made him a fool, and that he rightfully gets his @$$ kicked because he wanted to do a decent thing.  So, while he did get whipped in the fight this issue, he wound up winning.  Now that it seems he might not be played for a fool in the future of this comic, I’m curious if he’ll wind up turning into a cynical bastard now.  So that’s one thing I’m a little worried about for the future of this book.

A second thing I’m a little worried about is that I feel like Millar occasionally has the habit of insulting his audience.  I site as evidence the last scene in Wanted.  If that wasn’t a case of telling the audience they were blood thirsty S.O.B.’s, and meaning it, I don’t know what is.  I got that feeling in this issue of Kick Ass.  That Millar might be suggesting that we as an audience should be ashamed of our comic reading ways, that we should grow up and move on.  Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but I stand ready to see Millar insult me again.
