DC relaunch two of their team books this week (Teen Titans being the other), and Guggenheim & Kolins do seem to have grasped the nettle of the JSA with both hands, after Willingham’s lacklustre run.

After the intriguing teaser on the first page, we’re introduced to a potent and mysterious villain, touted as a super-powered terrorist (although we’re never made aware of exactly what his agenda is). Of course, the JSA wade in, confident of victory, with a nice lightness to their dialogue that’s been missing from this book for some time. Despite their expectations, the team spend much of the issue having their butts handed to them, with one senior member being gravely injured.

So far, so ho-hum. It’s Kollin’s art that lifts this above the crowd. Most of the book is done in the painterly style that’s been in evidence on the frontispieces of the DC Legacies series (and it is especially good at representing the more mature heroes of the JSA), but for sequences where Jay Garrick’s Flash is in action, Kollins reverts to his much looser, kinetic style. It’s an interesting juxtaposition, and I’m hoping for more in future issues.

There are enough sub-plots to keep this series ticking along for a while, making this issue a good point to jump on board.
