Alright thelast time I wrote a review of a JSA title it was bad , really bad I still have not forgiven Sturges and Williams for the mess that is the JSA All Stars . But the JSA title written by Bill Willingham is everything that a team book should be and this issue with its Stalag 17 feel is no exception . Sturges if you read this go have a long talk with Willingham , and learn to write a team book .

     This issue is the third installlment where the JSA has been defeated and imprisoned by a group of Nazi super villans , some of whom have goofy names but that is a small criticism . The united States is now firmly under control of the American Riech , and all of the heroes are imprisoned awaiting execution . Mr Terrific is a collaborator , telling a nazi historian the story of its defeat . Reading this story made feel like the old days of the JSA fighting nazis in WW2 , granted they did'nt lose but it was still a damn good read . I can't wait to see these evil bozos get their comeuppance in the end especially Kid Karnevil , who is like Damian from Batman but lacking in any likeability whatsoever . When Dr. Midnite clocked him in this issue I almost stood up and cheered .

   Willingham amazes me with his ability to write a team book , this probably comes from his days of writing his wonderful Elementals book . His charecters are fun and his take on Wildcat are dead on. He takes cliched situations and gives them a freshness that I have not seen in a while . As I said earlier this issue brings back the great WW2 prison camp movies without being stereotypical or dumb . Batman promising to teach Blue Beetle  "a few really viscious moves " to do to Mr. Terrific was especially chilling . This issue is just one of many that Willingham has done on this book and I hope he continues to do them for a long time . The only thing missing from this issue was the running gag about Liberty Belle and Hourman's marraige dissolving . I can't wait to see who she threatens to strangle next .

The art by by Jesus Merino and Jessse Delperdang is good , without being overdone .  The heroes are typical muscular without looking like the steroid popping ogres in JSA All Stars . The action scenes are well done without being overblown . There is an economy to the art that I have,nt seen in a while it actually reminds me of John Buscema's run on the Avengers . Which is a high compliment to the art team indeed . Hopefully these guys will be on the book for a long while .

  In the end this book really should be getting more coverage than it does . The team on it is having fun and it show in every page . There are no phony fights between members and no plastic Dolly Parton proportioned barbie dolls wearing thongs . It is simply a well written and drawn team book and is'nt that what we are looking for . Now can I go back to writing the negative reviews now without being accused of being a Red Lantern.
