This is the kind of issue Gardner Fox would knock out in half a page.
Needless, repetitive setup, rendered positively frustrating by the fact that the protagonist doesn't seem the understand the utterly simple concept of Eclipso rounding up the DC cavalcade of characters who are based on shadows or darkness.
I honestly see no reason for this issue to exist. Or if it does it could maybe be a freebie or ยข99 teaser, because that's what it felt like.
It might have been alright squeezing under the radar as a skimpy 8-page backup last issue setting up the next arc, but a WHOLE ISSUE??
Hey, it could all work if we were given a compelling reason to be interested in WHY we need to see this corralling process. I love a team build as much as the next Conor, but this was just tedious. Decent art though from Booth coming off of Earth One. The best part of the entire issue was the opening fact-based introduction pages where we see... OH! The Justice League. But they don't appear anywhere else of note.
I actually really like Robinson's notions of what to do with the Justice League lineup, how he has flipped the genders of the roster and used each character as a replacement proxy of the iconic JLA setup and plays off their mutual feelings of burden and inadequacy but so far the stories have been weak because they don't focus on his strengths as a writer, which are character interaction, and development, not just.. err action.
This title I think would be greatly served by scaling back the threats the JLA face, every world shattering villain starts to look the same. We need more insidious, specific and particular stories to kick start and illuminate this interesting team Robinson has assembled!
