Writer James Robinson wraps up the Omega arc with some classic action-adventure comics twists. While this arc hasn’t been a favorite of mine, the interplay and banter between the JLA and their Crime Syndicate counterparts has been pure old fashioned superhero fun.

In my opinion the thing that has pushed Robinson’s run off its balance the most has been Mark Bagley’s art. Much of it is his inconsistent character portrayals — costumes, faces, body types — from page to page but also his heavy use of tighter shots without providing context with establishing shots when the focus moves from one character to another. The net result for most of his JLA issues has been the feeling of unending unrelated fight sequences in unidentifiable places. This had clouded the storytelling when it maybe needed some help. Bagley truly has given us some great moments over this run (see last issue’s final page or Jade’s portrayal) but the following page just as often had people randomly without faces or eyes without pupils. We’ll see how Bret Booth fairs as he replaces Bagley as regular artist next month.

Reading note: last week’s Starman/Congorilla special issue technically should be read before this but it BARELY plays any part in understanding this issue’s plot. Though it is highly recommended!

Comments

  1. I’m waiting this run to be over with, very disappointed from the start. It also has the feeling of a placeholder until they find a new team, both creativly and character wise.

  2. I want to buy this book, but I need a good reason . . .
