I can't tell you how much I want to like this book. I love James Robinson's writing; I picked up "Starman" from its' issue #0 and read it right the way through. Same with "The Golden Age". Sure, they're a bit wordy, but both books are bright, intelligent and bursting with love for the characters. My Justice League credentials are even longer; I've been picking up for the last 20 years (give or take). But this isn't working for me, and I don't think it's just the whole JLA/JSA/Brightest Day/ White Lantern crossover thing (although I am finding it hard to keep track of that).
I think it's that I don't believe this incarnation of the JLA is really much of a team.
The device of using caption boxes with each character's logo to convey inner monologue isn't very new any more, and it serves only to emphasise the individuality of the members of this League, not how they function as a unit. Dick Grayson seems to be filling the familiar Batman role, coordinating the team, but in this JLA it feels more like he's herding cats, not spearheading an awesome squadron of warriors. There wasn't much of either Congo Bill or Starman in this story arc, which is a shame as they're the most sympathetic members of Robinson's JLA.
One of the highlights has been the handling of Dr Midnight in this story; he's solely neglected in my opinion, usually playing second string to Mr Terrific (unless he's doing an autopsy), so it's been good to see him get some story time. This issue also saw some nice moments for Jesse Quick, Hourman and Power Girl too. In fact, it's the JSA who have been the more interesting characters throughout this crossover, but I'm dismayed to see Obsidian reduced back to the ranting madman again, so soon after Willingham rehabilitated him after his spell as an egg!
Bagley's had a tough gig handling both the JLA and JSA with the additions of Kyle Rayner, Jade and a multitude of Alan Scott's constructs, but the art has seemed pedestrian with no standout moments.
One of the reasons I'm enjoying the JLI: Generation Lost book is the feeling of teamwork. Those characters may not like each other that much, but the way they're written makes me believe they have that "One for All and All for One" musketeer spirit. Robinson's JLA still look like strangers to one another, and the team and the book are suffering for that.
