This HC has weird pages that might have been chosen to resemble the old issues, but I don't know if the quality of the HC has been compromised in doing so - if this TP will last shorter than all those glossy TPs that smell like chemicals.
This is a DC comic book that you can place next to your Marvel HCs if you lost the dust jacket to both - this is again black with red letters (without the dust jacket).
This being an old comic means that shading is done using black lines, black color or the same color but a different shade, and there are some places where you see shading done using a bunch of straight diagonal lines that are adjacent to each other that seem to be machine made, that go from upper left to bottom right or bottom left to upper right.
There are also some places where you can see what I call printing dots (because I don't know the actual name) which means dots in alignment that do not cover the whole object they are printed on - get really close to your TV set or to a poster and you'll see that they are made of little dots - that's what I mean.
Here's an example:

Those pink dots only black.
There is also shading using black dots that resemble gravel - some places I saw those used are: trees, the ground and in Doctor Fate's helmet - they are like printing dots that aren't aligned.
Just a heads up if that style of shading bothers anyone.
This HC deals with the formation of the JLI meaning superheroes need to be assembled and chosen, and that leads to attention from the press and from the world that is worried that such a team of superheroes might give the USA a combatant advantage.
Of course with such worries and attention the team gets several justifications of why they needed to form, and those justifications happen mostly because they have formed which is a nice thought that several people explored - until when does having a superhero justify itself? for example: would there have been a Joker without a Batman?
This is a great floppy to floppy read, but not as a whole if that makes sense - there are Da Da Dumm! (overused dramatic music) moments at the end of each part (floppy), but to do that there are some characters that are left aside - maybe they will be revisited in the next collections of this series.
There are three people that appear for several parts and you know what happens to them but it would be nice to actually see them again, and the same for a JLI member that goes missing but I didn't really notice it until a few parts later - you can understand why they left but it would have been nice to actually see that, but that would ruin this HC's floppy to floppy read I guess.
Those cliffhangers at the end of each part (floppy) make this collection hard to put down.
I like the drawing but nothing jumps at me or gets engraved in my mind, but I really liked the way TV screens are drawn, meaning just the glass part of the front of the TV, but just the parts you see.
Here's an example:

It's obvious that the glass is bigger than what you see, otherwise it would fall off, but the TV screens are drawn like just the part of the glass you can see, and there is text above it or below it (Sandman TP #1 did a similar thing but with word balloons instead of just text).
There is also a nice font for the computers which resembles the font of really old computers, but that font or a similar font is used in abundance nowadays for computer text.
It's an enjoyable collection, and I'm interested in buying the full series despite the things I didn't like. I didn't enjoy the humor as much as the iFanboys seem to have in one of their video episodes but I enjoyed the abundance of thought balloons and the reminders that this guys have a life - like the fact the Blue Beetle has someone waiting for him at home.
Also it's a way for me to learn more about DC characters which I'm interested in doing.
It's like a good comedy show - like Only Fools and Horses or Are You Being Served?
Those two are great comedy shows that I'll watch anytime and buy the DVD to without much thought but I barely remember one episode from each show, and mostly parts of episodes.
They are highly enjoyable but not really going towards a goal.
There is a loose story line that goes through those shows and this comic book but they are the back drop - Only Fools and Horses is about the three guys trying to get rich and their exploits doing so, in Are You Being Served? is the department store and the employees in it, and in this is the forming of the team and are X really trustworthy.
In the three of those there are advancements but the storyline is an excuse to put them in new exploits, and there seems to be no goal that the creators intend to get to but it is still fun and enjoyable.
Also there is an added bonus for people that read Howard The Duck TP Media Duckling (which was okay) before reading this collection, since otherwise I wouldn't have noticed the guys in yellow radiation suits that appear for a panel or two in JLI which cracked me up.
