In the middle of this issue, Booster says, “We are no closer to knowing what the hell [Max]’s up to than that first night in the New York embassy.” And despite that admittance, we don’t know any more at the end of this issue than we did at the beginning.
Holy crap, everybody, what has this series been doing for the past few months??
That may be a little unfair, but seriously, the only clear goal Max has had was to kill Magog, which didn’t even necessarily concern the plot of this book. Winick handled it excellently, thank goodness, making all the Brightest Day stuff dovetail to our heroes’ plight in a way that made both storylines more interesting. Other than that, this series has consisted mostly of Max being meanderingly sinister and the JLI getting chased around while not learning anything important about what’s going on. And I didn’t even realize how frustrated I was with all that until I read that line of Booster’s.
This issue is more of the same. The JLI get smacked around by the Creature Commandos some more, the final pages (which were spoiled by the solicit) indicate that Cap is about to get smacked around by Power Girl, and, after Checkmate gets disbanded, its former Black King finds out that Max is really controlling it.
I know that last part sounds like important plot development, but step back and think about it: Checkmate being in Max’s pocket is nothing that we as readers don’t already know, and why the hell Max bothered to take it over goes completely unexplained. Is his whole plot just to kick the shit out of the JLI as frequently as possible? That would explain a lot about this series, but it would be a mightly slight plot for an eventish book like this one.
Seriously, commenters, please help me out! My faith in this book has been shaken.
Bennet’s art was pretty good. There are a few places where things look weird (did Max make everyone forget how to draw Fire?), but mostly, it was solid work. Thank goodness.

Fire was in something close to 4 panels in this issue and they all look fine…what are you talking about?
Also, while it might be true that we aren’t much closer to learning Max’s alterior motives, the plot has advanced considerably issue after issue with excellent pacing for a bi-weekly series (just compare it with Brightest Day if you don’t believe me). In my opinion, the story has moved logically and fluidly, giving each character a moment in the spotlight. This issue wasn’t the best so far — the moment with Jaime’s dad was a bit of a sore thumb — but it certainly wasn’t bad. It left me looking forward to finding out what Max is going to do to Jaime and plenty of chessecakey shots of Power Girl!
It was important that he took it over because he realized that a super secret orginization that everyone knows about is pretty worthless.
