A lot of stuff happens in this book. Maybe too much. There were a lot of times that I could clearly see this had SOMETHING to do with the Enchantress plot established by #1, but I couldn’t quite tell what it was.

We’re still spending most of our time getting to know our characters, though, and in that it does fine. Most of our time is spent with Deadman and Dawn (aka Dove, though I didn’t realize that until very late, though I feel like I was supposed to know already), and those are really great scenes. They’ve got a heck of a dysfunctional relationship as only Boston Brand can make it. There’s a moment that just really encapsulates Boston’s character for me, the kind of moment that veers sharply and demonstrates that what I thought was him being decent…wasn’t. I’m much more compelled by Deadman in this handful of pages than in the two issues of DC Universe Presents in which he’s starred so far.

The art is really great. Warm, soft lines give the panels a feeling of intimacy, and for the kind of story that this book is telling that works really well. Right now we’ve got a bunch of characters in private moments, small moments, but even when the magic comes into things and there’s glowy stuff all over the place, the art doesn’t seem compromised. I like it a lot.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
