The biggest problem when writing Sci-Fi or Fantasy is creating a credible threat. That is to say, making the heroes and villains just strong enough but also just weak enough that they do not seem omnipotent or incapable. This becomes a major problem in Sci-Fi and Fantasy because when magic is introduced in fantasy it creates a deus ex machina in which everything can be done or undone with the wave of a hand and in Sci-Fi technology can become so advanced that it becomes basically the same as magic. What Lemire and Fawkes have done here in JLD #15, is ride that line between omnipotence and incapable for our heroes and pit them against an enemy just as capable as they are. Tapping into that flash of brilliance that was the JLD Annual #1, Lemire and Fawkes show that this title and this team, when done right, is just as interesting and compelling as it’s lighter mainstream equivalent. The art by Mikel Janin is as clean and tight as ever and reflects the book’s tone prefectly. All in all, this book if finally leaving up to its potential, hopefully it can stay that way.
