Geoff Johns is usually a solid story teller, whose tales possess the organic structure of a beginning, middle and end. He is not a subtle psychologist, but his stories often have an emotional kick. Johns’ fund of general knowledge does seem to be somewhat limited, and he tends to get his facts confused. For example, in last week’s “Aquaman” 0, Johns writes that Aquaman’s mother “sired” (or fathered) two sons. In this week’s “Justice League,” the League is looking for a lost tribe of the Amazon who hold the secret of the Cheetah. So where does the League go on their search? To the Congo. I guess the tribe got so lost that they ended up on the wrong continent. Maybe this will be explained in the next issue, but it does appear to be a mistake. Of course, the cheetah is native to Africa (the jaguar is native to South America) so Johns should have left the Amazon out of the story entirely. Except for that glaring error, this issue is actually a pretty solid beginning to a new story arc. Cheetah appears to be a good villain for the entire League in that her powers are based in magic, so she can even harm Superman. The reader gets the impression that the threat will grow even direr when the League finds the lost tribe. Since I am not a big DC reader, I haven’t encountered much of Tony Daniel’s art, but I find his work on this comic to be impressive. Daniel is from the Jim Lee school of heavy cross hatching, so the transition from Lee’s work to Daniel’s is not jarring. Daniel generally does a good job with anatomy and action scenes. What I particularly liked about the art in this comic is the cinema graphic close ups to show feeling. We get close ups of faces, eyes and lips to show how emotive the characters can be.
