Man, this just feels like a tedious and shitty rip off of Queen and
Country, which is what Trautman’s Checkmate felt like, so I guess I
should have expected it.

This book may have claimed to be a JSA book,
but because of the focuse on Mr. Terrific, it just didn’t feel like
one, so much as a Checkmate special ops team.

JSA fits into the cloak
and dagger realm about as well as a storm trooper at a Star Trek
convention. Hey, I know it’s a lame comparison, but I tried.

What I’m
saying here is, it just doesn’t feel right. It feels forced. When Johns
had them fight Kobra it was in a straight forward way and had a
definite resolution. This one feels like its going to be murky the
whole way and moral compromises will be prevelant. Again, that doesn’t
gel with JSA in my book.

The art was pretty good. I think it looked
suitably realistic. Though I feel it bares repeating, Power Girl’s boob window makes it so hard to take her seriously as a leader.

It wasn’t a bad book, just not the kind of book I
enjoy.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 3 - Good

  1. What about JSA The Libery File? They seemed to fit into the espionage pretty well.

  2. that’s an elseworlds and doesn’t count. That’s like saying because Spidey kills in a what if he should kill in regular continuity
