So, I know this book has been out for 3 months now as of this week, but I didn't pick it up when it was released and my wife just got it for me last week for my birthday. Now that I finished reading it, I can't believe I waited so long! I've only been reading Jonah Hex since the first issue of the Six Gun War arc, but I've really become attached to the character and it is the book I look forward to the most every month. This OGN is absolutely perfectly written to cater both regular readers and Hex newbies (which I'm guessing is why it was released right before the movie came out). There is so much in-depth character exploration here showing several events that led Jonah to become the gruff a-hole he is, and it's done to the point that you pretty much feel bad for the guy and actually start rooting for him when he is killing people, insulting people, yelling at them, and basically just completely disrespecting everyone he comes across. You get to see soft sides in him (such as with Dag the dog), and you also get to see so many points in which you really think that he may crack a smile or shed a tear of give a hug to his new-found family, putting you on the edge of your seat, only to be let down again by Jonah retreating back into his dark self. Palmiotti and Gray so masterfully write this book that I can't even understand how in the world this book is being so overlooked by the mainstream (as they do every month, but in this OGN, they are given so much more room to get readers AND characters emotionally invested in the events). I personally feel the only disservice to this book is the art. I know that DeZuniga was chosen for his legacy with the character (being the first to draw Hex back in 1972), but his style just isn't pretty enough to the eye for an entire graphic novel. You really have to see it to know what I'm talking about, and you can totally disagree. In fact, I hope you do disagree, because then this might get a perfect rating for you, which I totally wanted to give it! Either way, I feel that this book should be essential reading for anyone even remotely interested in Hex, westerns, comics, and even good fiction in general.

Yeah, baby! Good to see a review of this popping up now. This was an awesome book and really a good introduction to the character.
I don’t think Six Gun War was a good place to start. I recommend you pick up any of the other trades. Each of the collections has two or more amazing stories with a few more excellent tales.
Jonah Hex has been in my top five favorite comics since I started buying it with issue #23.
I love it so much that I buy it in issue and trade and would buy any hardcover collection they release.
I also don’t want to see the book go . . .
Yes! This book was excellent. Hope we get one of these every year. Agree on DeZuniga. I think he did a very solid job (I’d give the art a 3 or 4) but I think if Bernet was on this, it would be a Eisner nominee without a doubt.
