It’s hard to believe but “Jonah Hex” #70 is the final issue in what’s been an incredible run. It’s been a series that few people felt would last as long as it has and it’s one that I’ll definitely miss. Sure, Jonah Hex will be appearing in the upcoming “All-Star Western” book, but this marks the end of a high quality series.

Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti give us a fitting finale by looking back on the rough and violent life of Jonah.  Aptly titled “Weird Western”, the story is a hallucinogenic mind trip that looks into Jonah’s past as well as examining what his future could have looked like.  It’s a cryptic retrospection that’s cleverly conceived but occasionally confusing and unclear. It’s definitely an unconventional final issue but is also one that’s strikingly fitting.

Ryan Sook and Diego Olmos split the art duties and for the most part they get the job done. While there’s nothing particularly great about the look of the book, both artists use a steady, down to earth style that works just fine. Their styles are quite different but I had no problem with the transition between the two.

It’s sad to see this series leave the shelf. The final issue gives us an interesting look at Jonah, some pretty funny inside jokes, and the ride off into the sunset that the character deserves. I wish we would have seen a little more of Jonah in action, but this is a satisfying ending to a series that has offered so many great stories over the years.
