What a strange issue to follow up the movie with.

That’s not to say it’s bad–this series is consistently very good, and issue 57 is no exception–but it is the most purely funny Jonah Hex comic I’ve ever read. There’s none of the darkness, violence, and moral quandariesquandries that tend to be present in this series, but there is… Aw, hell, you’ve all seen the horse-tackling panel. You know what you’re getting into.

The one part of this issue that didn’t quite work for me were all the guest stars. With the exception of Scalphunter, none of the guesting heroes really added anything to the story that wouldn’t have been just as effective with generic lawmen. I never thought I’d be complaining about Bat Lash getting more panel time, but he just didn’t stand out at all, so why bother? It’s probably possible to throw five characters, some of whom have never been in the book before, into an issue halfway through and characterize them all well, but Gray and Palmiotti didn’t pull that off here.

Jordi Bernet’s art is, as always, fantastic, and it works just as well in a comedic issue as it does in serious ones. Not much to say there.

And P.S., storytelling kid? Jonah has killed a grizzly bear with a tomahawk. One outta three ain’t bad.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. The point of those characters is to just up the tale for the kids. Worked very well.

  2. Absolutely agree with you about the Western guest stars.
