I only chose this as POTW because everything else was just as bleh and I think overall this series has been better than everything else released this week. Go back and read back issues and skip this month.
With that said....
Nothing in the story really screams exceptional to me and in fact it seems to be slightly to the left of average if truth be told. First, The idea that Jonah is saving up all his bounty money to settle down and build a house is just not on par with the character. I just don't see it. Secondly, Jonah isn't supposed to have any redeeming qualities about him and yet he did the "right" thing in the end. This has happened in other issues, but I just felt as if in this issue he would have said, "Fuck it, I'm outta here." So, because of the glaring character writing flaws of this issue I can only give the story a 2.
The art was atrocious in this issue. Jonah is supposed to look world weary, grizzled, and just plain ugly. Yet, in a couple panels Jonah looks young, full of vigor, and actually kinda normal on several pages. This art style should be reserved for Marvel books and should stay the hell away from Jonah Hex. I gave the art a 1, only because iFanboy doesn't allow the use of negative numbers.
Overall not even close to being the best Jonah issue, but in a week full of mediocre books I just couldn't pick anything else that was better. If I could go back and do it all over again, I think I might skip this whole week.

A little harsh, I didn’t find him all that out of character. Have you read the showcase? Jonah has wrecked face out of moral right before.
I have not read the Showcase, but it is on my shelf ready for when I choose to tackle it. I have been reading Jonah since the Vertigo days and I just don’t see how him saving up bounties to settle down with is in character. It seems contrived and forced to set up his eventual revenge. I understand this is necessary sometimes, especially in a book where repeating itself is the norm, but taking the character completely out his realm just doesn’t sit well with me.
I absolutely love this book, normally. This is the first issue I have ever felt was sub-par and I might be harsh, but it is only outta love for the series. I just don’t want to see Jonah Hex drift into the realm of mediocre.
The ethics of Jonah Hex are pretty complex. He has done some stuff "out of character" before. I thought this was easily one of the best issues of this whole run.
It would have been a perfect "last" issue of the series.
