JONAH HEX #30

Every time I remember to pick up this book, I feel guilty that I forgot to pick it up the last time.  If you like westerns or gritty stories even a little, you should be reading this book.  Go out an pick up an issue, because for the most part you can pick up any one and not have to worry about missing out on a story arc, with the exception for his Origins and The Ballad of Talula Black, which I still need to track down the other issue.

This issue did something that really showed why this book is good.  Jonah Hex is barely even in it and I still thoroughly enjoyed everything this issue had to offer.  We have a gang that arrives in a town of 6, yes that’s no typo, and see them just mess everything up.  “Lucky” as he is so appropriately named, can’t seem to do this job right.  It doesn’t help that Hex is in town either.

Suffice to say everything ends poorly as usual for everyone other then Hex in this book.  I really hope that Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti never ever leave.

I thought when I picked up this book that I was not going to like the art.  Oddly this book has had lots of artists that I didn’t like on the cover and then once I read the issue, they grew on me.  Same can be said for Jordi Bernet, who did a great job drawing this book both cartoony and gritty.  I say cartoony and gritty because all of the violence was drop down drag out type of stuff, but at the same time Lucky looked almost cartoony with his had and big mustache in some panels  At the same time would I like to see this artist draw say Superman or any other superhero?  No, I don’t think his style would be appropriate and I wouldn’t like it, but for Jonah Hex it works wonders.

I’m really glad I picked up this book and I think if more people gave it a try they would enjoy it too.  I’ve never had this book disappoint me and one day at a con I picked up a ton of them issues in a dollar box.  If you somehow miraculously find a similar deal, I say don’t even think about it.  It’s all those western movies you wish they were making for the last 10 years.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good

  1. I only read this book in trades, but each time one comes out, I read it cover to cover in one sitting.  It’s easily one of my favorite series out right now.  I’m pretty excited for the new trade that comes out this April or May.

    Nice review, as always, jstump
