Having read the original book on which this series is based, I had a hard time figuring out how this adaptation would do moving so much action to a different medium. I am happy to report that this entire mini (much like the mini before it) was very successful in capturing the spirit of the source material. Some characters have been slightly updated for modern readers (for instance, John Carter uses colloquialisms that a Civil War vet would not use) and some characters and events that would not fit in a mini are excised, but overall Sam Humphries should be commended for adapting a story that is a ton of fun and very engaging.
The art is phenomenal. All the positive word of mouth I've heard about Ramon Perez was definitely deserved. His work features exciting and vibrant storytelling with excellent acting in each character, from their face to their posture. Jordie Bellaire's colors are top notch. Utilizing color to make the world seem foreign (for instance, every single blue is mixed with just enough green to remind the reader that we are not on earth), Bellaire's work on this series makes him an easy favorite for my colorist of the year. Each cover is a beautiful pin-up worthy of the iFanboy "Covers of the Week" segment.
If you are interested in pulp or action and adventure, I think that you will like this mini and the mini that preceded it. I would recommend looking for the back issues instead of trade waiting. The first mini was only released in digest form on non-glossy paper and this art is so good that it deserves to be seen as large and clear as possible.
Story: 4 - Very Good
