Wow. Kubert’s anthology was-in one word — resonant.

Not to sound pretentious, but there is absolutely not artifice in this collection. Just fantastic storytelling.

The Hawkman story harkens back to the comics of the 50’s. As a side note, this story was my first Hawkman story ever. Not a bad initiation, huh?

Kubert’s “Spit” I will never forget. The deliberate choice NOT to ink and color the art…to let the heavy pencils carry the weight…what a Dickensian topic. A run-away orphan, on the edge of death from exposure and malnourishment…with no proper name other than “Spit.”

USS Stevens — another unforgettable story. Seriously, folks, this is unpretentious, beautiful goddamn storytelling.

Angel and the Ape — not my cup of tea but I get it. A zany, newspaper strip kind of comedy tale.

If you consider yourself a comics fan, Joe Kubert Presents will own a place on your shelf of greatness. I’m not saying that out of some misplaced nostalgia…

This is great stuff.
