I liked a lot of Matt Fraction’s run on “Iron Man.” Matt Fraction did a particularly good job of rounding out the characters of Tony Stark and his supporting cast, but Fraction ignored an important part of the Iron Man legacy. Iron Man has always been about ever changing, updated armors, new gadgets and new weapons. Kieron Gillen gets this aspect of the Iron Man mythology. I love the idea of the new, modular armor. I like the light bending technology, and the use of smoke to blind the villains. I thought the visual joke of Tony using his robots to feed himself a grilled cheese sandwich was clever. My two problems with this issue are that the villains are dispatched a bit too quickly with too little strain, and the use of the extremis virus. If this story stands unmodified or unqualified, then the Marvel universe now has a cure for cancer. That strikes me as too great of a departure from reality. I didn’t like that Fraction implied that Tony had a solution for fossil fuel dependence, either. In Fraction’s run, Stark Resilient was making cars powered by repulsor technology. In the future, I hope Gillen utilizes some of the long time Iron Man supporting cast like Mrs. Arbogast and Bethany Cabe.
In the minds of many comic fans, Greg Land is public enemy number one. I just don’t see anything to bitch about in this comic. Land understands that superhero comics are about sex appeal, and Land brings the sexy. Tony is handsome and Pepper is more beautiful than she has ever been. Even I thought that the characters smiled too much in issue one, but facial expressions are appropriate here. Land gets body proportions right. In the past, I think his females have had hips that were too narrow, but that is not the case in this issue. The backgrounds all look good, with the inside of Tony’s lab, the Latin American hacienda, and the medical lab all looking as one would expect. Iron Man’s new grey and silver stealth armor looks cool, as though it were designed by Apple’s product design team. In the future, I’d like to see armor that departs even more from the traditional Iron Man looks. I would like to see a radically redesigned face plate, for instance.
