Marvel appears to be determined to keep trying certain concepts until they catch on. Persistence did pay off with “X-Factor” and “X-Force,” both of which seem to be reasonably successful after each were cancelled several times in the past. Now Marvel is having one more go at War Machine, and this time it might stick. I suppose they decided that calling the book “Iron Man 2.0” would draw more sales, at least initially, and I am sure they are right. Nick Spencer is writing this book, and it feels a lot like “Thunder Agents,” both stylistically and tonally in that both books have slowly unraveling mysteries. Stark Resilient has hired Jim Rhodes out to the U.S. military which insists that it must have an Iron Man weapon. Rhodes’ first assignment for the military is to investigate a series of terrorist attacks that have a connection to a supposedly dead defense department scientist named Palmer Addley. Spencer has been dropping a trail of bread crumbs for us to follow in the Addley mystery for the last four issues. In this installment, we find out that the adolescent Addley was already unhinged, and having delusions inspired by political ideas from both the right and the left. Spencer appears to be partially modeling Palmer Addley on the alleged assailant of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. I’m giving this issue 3 stars for story because it is almost all exposition, although it is necessary, and done in a creative way. I would give the story arc 4 stars overall up to this point. I like the revamp of the War Machine armor, which will now be better suited for “Secret Avengers” assignments, but I wish they had gone for an even more extensive change. The basic Iron Man mask has grown especially stale, and begs for a redesign. Various artists have worked on “Iron Man 2.0” with this issue illustrated by Ariel Olivetti. I’ve always enjoyed Olivetti’s work, and I think he does a fine job in this issue.
