Somehow my LCS recieved this last week. Honestly, I probably wouldn't have picked it up if it werent for the intrigue of reading it a week early—I know this logic probably doesn't make sense for most people but it seemed to make sense to me at the time. Anyways, the first issue was Nick Spencer's very dissapointing Marvel debut. It did nothing to capture my interest whatsoever. In fact, nothing seemed to happen at all! However, having listened to Spencer's word balloon interview about his work on the title I knew to expect certain plot elements which did sound interesting—even though these seemingly captivating ideas were nowhere to be found in the bland first issue.
So long story short, I gave this title a second chance. An I'm really glad I did! This issue solidified the spy/espionage thriller tone which was barely present in the slow-moving debut. Indeed, this actually serves as an introduction to the title much more effectively than the first issue!
The general plot is that Rhodes is working for the military, trying to stop a mysterious new terrorist cell which is led by a man who is, in fact, deceased. The question of how the War Machine armor can battle a "ghost" terrorist cell is an interesting one: particularly when the armor itself can just as easily become a weapon of the enemy in question.
It's safe to say that Rhodey's approach toward fighting a traditional enemy gets tested here—big time. And he loses his first run in with the enemy handidly. In fact, his loss is illustrated particularlry well, both from a storytelling persepctive as well as literally illustrated well with panels that truly showed just how decidedly beaten he was. I won't ruin the surprise but the size and scope of his loss is hilarious—but it also serves to set up the stakes quite effectively while offering a captivating mystery with high-tech action throughout. I'm hooked. If the tone of the book can build upon the foundation which was--unfortuantley, almost entirely--set in this issue, I may be in for the long haul after all.... ya'll
