I can’t decide whether the artist on this should be given a commendation or a written warning for the panel layouts in this book.  The sixth page of this book is positively saturated with word balloons and scrunched up panels/  On the one hand, I don’t like the look of it, on the other hand, all the dialog is completely unnecessary, so it was almost as if the Bellegarde noticed that it was a lot of uninteresting talking, and so scrunched it into one ugly looking page, so the reader is confronted with the decision to slog through it, or skip to the next, more visually enticing page.

 (Pro tip: skip that page)

Apart from that one page, the art in this story is fantastic Invinci-art.  I love that they stuck with Crabtree on colors.  It helps keep this tied into the main story.  I hope they release all this stuff as a prequel trade..

  1. i think the writer had more to do with that page of text than the artist, dude

  2. @edward: It depends.  Some creative teams have the writer scripting what’s on evey page, sometimes the writer gives the story to the artist and lets them play around with the page layout.  I’ve worked with both scenarios, and won’t pretend to know how Cereno and Bellegarde work (Kirkman, while he did edit the story, wasn’t the write for it).
