Despite all the accolades, I’ve had no love for the Invincible Iron Man. It’s not that the series has wronged me in any way. It was just one of those things where I could see the craft and the reason why people liked the series, but it just never really clicked for me. In listening to Matt Fraction on a recent episode of Wordballoon, I was convinced to give the series yet another try, only because the concept sounded to good to pass up. And suddenly, the series that I could care less about has become a highlight in my week of books.

It’s not that Invincible Iron Man’s stories have been bad or that I thought it was a horrible comic. It’s just that it never gave me something to be into. But this issue has changed all of that. I have to give Fraction his due: this issue is sensationally enjoyable. The eight page sequence where Tony is essentially giving his own eulogy was beautifully executed, and spoke true to who Tony Stark is. It was a captivating segment in a issue filled with excellent storylines and plot points that will tie into what will essentially be a major part of The Siege. I’m really excited that I’m excited about the series, and I can’t wait to see where the next issue takes us.

Usually, my major beef with this series was LaRocca’s art. I just didn’t like it. While many of his heroing segments were strong and his storytelling was precise, I just didn’t like the way he drew people. It was a combination of their structure and the coloring, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. In this issue, this only happened occasionally for me. Maybe it was because the writing was so sharp and the storytelling so well done, that I didn’t really notice any art inconsistencies. It’s never a bad thing to be so lost in a world that you miss the faults. There were a few panels that I didn’t like, but overall, I felt this was some of the best work I’ve seen out of him.

If you’re thinking about starting this series, it’s a great jump-on point. The story is fresh and exciting, and the backmatter of the issue is new reader friendly–it recaps the entire series so far in just a few short pages. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up!

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

Comments

  1. Nice review. This issue really was the natural conclusion to the last 3-4 outstanding issues, but somehow it remained a standout.

  2. It definitely had that nice balance to it.  If only more comics could do this more often…

  3. Interesting review.
