I love that Kirkman takes time to fill out his world. In this issue he further unfolds the wounded relationship of Robot(Rex)/Monster Girl, while Mark is dealing with the effects of the scourge virus.

Reading the last few issues of Invicible, I’ve been oscillating a bit over whether the overall story of this series seemed to be getting a little bit lost in the weeds, trying to juggle such a massive cast, or if all of this side character work was all preamble to the rumored bloodbath coming in the build-up to issue 100. Either way, it is working. Even a meandering Kirkman arc works, and tends to at least include one issue that hits like this one does.

Robot(Rex) is still an irritating know-it-all, but an increasingly sympathetic one now that his plans aren’t working. He led an invasion into another dimension, but no one followed. He got the girl, but it didn’t last. He thought he’d saved two worlds, but it didn’t stick for the Flaxans, and we’ll see what that means for Earth.

Monster Girl remains fairly undeveloped, but considering the reveal at the end of this issue, I’m sure we’ll be getting her side of life among the Flaxans very soon. Now that she and Robot(Rex) look like they’ve begun to reconcile it seems clear that at least one of them should be dead pretty soon, and I think I’m getting to a point where I might be sad when that happens.
