I bought my first issue of Invincible some months ago, the one where Vegas was destroyed by Dinosaurus, which I enjoyed. So tried this one.
Amazing.
First, let me say that I know there there are 83 issues of story prior to this that I am mostly unfamiliar with. I do not really know these characters yet. Nor was this a "jumping on" point issue. None of this matters. The story reads well enough on its own, and I can get the rest at anytime. Note to self: the best time to jump onto a good comic is anytime.
As to the story; my heavens, I'd forgotten comics can do this! I've just watched the credible beginning of a "super-villain," and it's the hero of the book!
Oddly, what is great about this comic is how it reminds me of silver age storytelling without it being nostalgic or hokey. At the center of the story is how the glassified site of Vegas is now being converted into a vast solar generator. The use of the mirrored site that was one Las Vegas, and Dinosaurus's motivations in making it this show (1) more than passing knowledge of a social issue (water/environmental issues for city in the desert); (2) credible science fiction (inventing a double-sided solar panel); and (3) saying something important about the issue without undermining the story. The elegance with which all of this was done while simply delivering a ripping comic is rare. I cannot believe I've been missing this.
As for the art, one word: Dinosaurus.
So the iFanboy three has been saying how great this book is for a while. A hearty "I told you so" from any of them would not be out of place.
