This issue of Invincible had everything I could hope for in a superhero comic. Great art, hilarious situations, some action and critical plot developments. In this issue, we're introduced to Dinosaurus, a ridiculous T-Rex, who is upset that Invincible is helping clean up the mess left in the aftermath of the Invincible War, instead of letting nature take its course. Dinosaurus is only around long enough to rant about missed public works projects before getting his clock cleaned by a Invincible haymaker. The purpose of this scene is to show the toll superheroics has taken on Mark. He is struggling with whether he ought to remove any threats before they have an opportunity to harm anyone he's sworn to protect. This is a truly ethical dilemma that was introduced by his brother Oliver. After all of the death and destruction of the Invincible War, he affirmed that he would "shoot now, ask questions later". In this issue, Mark has dinner with Atom Eve's family, which proves to be beyond awkward for him and hilarious for the readers. It also offers us a glimpse into Eve's trouble family life. There are so many other plot points that Kirkman pushed forward that it is remarkable that it was all done in one issue. We see how Cecil's hubris is about to come back and bite him in the ass in the form of Conquest. The sequid subplot, which was planted ages ago, is coming to a head. And the last panel is a jaw dropping moment, which I should've seen coming but didn't.
The art team of Ottley, Rathburn and Plascencia knocked it out of the park again. I can go on and on about Ottley pencils, but I just want to point out how he draws facial expressions. Check out the dinner scene. Wow. There are hardly any words on the page, but you can feel the discomfort in the air.
Invincible #68 picks up the story perfectly after we've spent time with Nolan and Allen the Alien in the two previous Preparations for War issues. This issue sets the stage for at least the next year, and I think Cecil put it best in this issue: "Oh, fu-_
