Question: If you could time travel and you ended up meeting yourself, and then you ended up having sex with yourself, does that make you gay or is that just masturbation?

Well I am here to tell you that the answer to that question is not presented in The Infinite #2 (thank god), but rather the question of if Rob Liefeld drew any feet in this issue is – the answer is YES, and in one panel there are even shoelaces on Bo’s boots.

Poor Liefeld, the pot-shots are just too easy and really, who wants to read another review bashing his art, it’s just when you put out a comic and the title of said comic is completely covered up by the art then it’s safe to assume that the art is the main focus of selling the comic (take a look at the cover to the side there. See what I mean?). It’s funny, most of my reviews here on iFanboy focus mostly on the story and I rarely spend anytime discussing ART. I believe “art” is subjective and you get what you bring to it. What is ugly in one persons eyes is beautiful in another.

I want to point out two pages in The Infinite to illustrate my point here (if you have a copy of the comic go grab it): There is a two page discussion between Bowen and his younger self Bo on pages 7 and 8. There are 9 panels total on those two pages – and almost every panel has a close up of either Old Bowen or Younger Bowen with the SAME grimacing expression and sneering eyes. At first glance it could be laughable at its simplicity – but the more I stared at these to pages the more another artist came to mind: Andy Warhol.

Now don’t get the wrong idea, I’m not comparing Liefeld to Warhol, but there is a certain “POP ART” to pages 7 and 8 of The Infinite #2. So much so that I could see this hanging in a gallery somewhere and people standing around talking about it’s significance. I know Liefeld isn’t putting as much thought into his art as Warhol did, but ask yourself, just how long did Warhol think about putting 4 identical Campbell Soup cans next to each other?

The thing is, love him or hate him, Liefeld will be remembered long after he is gone.

oh, and Kirkman’s story here is pretty great too.

  1. Thanks for the review, I picked up #1 cause the concept was interesting, unfortunately I didn’t “enjoy” it enough to return to issue #2. Is this one better, cause you gave the story a 4 but mostly focused on Liefield’s art in your review? 😉

    • the story in issue 2 focused a lot about the dilemmas of traveling back in time to team up with your younger self, knowing things that your younger self doesn’t know, and if you should tell your younger self these things?

      that make any sense? =)

Let’s try that again: Future Bowen wants to save himself (Present Bowen) from the pain of losing someone he loved dearly. This is handled well thanks to Kirkman’s gift for dialog. I enjoy reading what he puts to page in anything he does – Walking Dead, Astonishing Wolfman, even Super Dinosaur. What sets Kirkman above a lot writers is is ability to give each character their own voice and not have everyone sound like “Robert Kirkman”.

Later in this issue they do meet up with some bad guys (dude with the mohawk) and some fighting takes place. But this fight is interesting because Bowen uses his knowledge of the future to try and persuade Mohawk man to rethink his allegiance to The Infinite. That is something you don’t get in most comics. pretty cool.
