Infestation #1 isn’t as cool as you thought it would be. Don’t
get me wrong, this first issue has enough oddball elements to make the
story a crazy supernatural romp, but it doesn’t even come close to being
as cool as a story in which the Transformers, the original Star Trek
characters, the Ghostbusters and the G.I. Joe characters all got
together. Yeah, it’s a silly criteria, but I was hoping to get a silly
story akin to the ones that I would make when I made all my different
action figures invade my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Technodrome
playset. Well courtesy of comic masters Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, we
indeed get a silly story, but one that more realistically ties these
different universes together (sigh). In another IDW series’ universe
(the Zombies Vs Robots one), an outbreak of hivemind-attached zombies
spreads through the world, and with the assistance of zombified robots
(WHAT the HELL?), they conqueror a Stargate-like portal and spread the
infestation to the 4 aforementioned universes. The story itself was a
little confusing and nonsensical, but the mere fact that there were
vampire secret agents fighting hivemind zombies and zombie robots
(again, WHAT the HELL?) was enough fun to ensure that this was a
serviceable issue. I’m much more interested in Abnett & Lanning’s
stories involving the 4 universes, which we’re going to get with four
2-issue mini series. This issue served as a set-up to what the fans are
really anticipating, and while this was alright, it’s surely going to be
outshone by the main events.
