Writer Greg Pak begins the end of his fantastic Incredible Hulk run with “The Heart of the Monster” part 1. Instead of feeling like a conclusion it’s typical Pak which I found very satisfying.

Pak’s story starts rather reserved. Red She-Hulk/Betty took off with Bruce’s arch nemesis last issue leaving him in a state of depression and denial. Jen and Rick come to check on their friend and offer their support. But these first few pages give way to what we all want from a Hulk book…smashing. Pak uses what made his run on this title so epic, fast paced action mixed with interesting character dynamics. I had a blast with this issue and it looks like Pak is going out with a bang.

Paul Pelletier handles the art on this issue and he offers a good balance to it. I thought his character work in the opening pages relayed the emotion needed. But he clearly is more in his comfort zone once the action picks up. I loved his action panels particularly his huge, snarling monsters. He really brings the action to life.

As I said, this issue is what I’ve come to expect from this book. There’s some large scale action, good character interaction, and plenty of smashing. Pelletier’s art gets better as the book progresses and he is a near perfect fit for Hulk style action. This is a good book and worth picking up.
