I’m going to state this upfront:  I think Greg Pak could write a book that featured Ares and Hercules fighting, and I would buy it.  These two guys don’t just fight like brothers, they THROW DOWN.  Like, “fight on top of an old S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier amid a storm of missiles” throw down.  And that’s only half of this issue.

As I mentioned in my review last month, the Incredible Herc is one of Marvel’s strongest titles around.  It’s been quietly coming out each and every month and I feel like it been getting lost in the shuffle of Skrulls, Iron Man, and well, everything else in the Marvel U.  And it’s a shame really because this book is so solid.

In this issue, we find our heroes arguing over whether or not to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D.  You see, for all his immaturity, Amadeus Cho is one smart little kid.  And he’s not afraid to to show everyone.  Herc plays the voice of reason in this issue while also trying to battle Ares in the aforementioned helicarrier/missile battle.  It’s pretty astounding just how much in going on in this issue from the epic fights to the cerbral discussions as to what’s right and wrong.  Herc is the perfect foil to Cho’s impulsive youth, and it’s great fun in seeing the two interact.  Oh, and you have to see the last panel in this book, if only for that, “You know, I kind of feel the same way about the Marvel U right now” feeling.

Khoi Pham keeps the art goodness coming in this issue.  His epic style is perfect and he really nails the important moments.  Most of the fights scenes are well constructed and easy to follow.  It’s just damn fun to look at.

One other thing worth mentioning:  The “Previously in…” page is hysterical and is one of the best I’ve seen in quite some time.  Fans of the series will appreciate the humor in it.

And maybe that’s just what makes this series so much fun.  It’s the fact that while it takes itself seriously, it’s able to have fun with it too.  I mean, who would have a thought a book about the 7th smartest person in the Marvel U teamed up with a bruiser like Hercules would ever be compelling in anyway?  Well, Greg Pak believed and Marvel did too.  And obviously, so do I.
