I’m a relatively new convert to Criminal, but I had big expectations coming into this first issue of Incognito.  I’m happy to report that this first issue lived up to those expectations handily.  Not only that, but (from my limited experience) this is one of the best first issues I’ve read, whether for a series or just an arc.  Brubaker is simply the man.  He does an excellent job of establishing the universe, introducing our protagonist, and drawing you into the story like a moth to a flame.  On top of it, Phillips is right on target with the atmosphere; he is again a perfect fit for something like this.  Also, the spread illustration of The Shadow in the back matter is pretty effin’ awesome.

If you’re curious, or a Criminal fan, or, heck, just a comics fan, you NEED to pick up this issue.  You’ll know immediately if it’s for you, and, honestly, how couldn’t it be?

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
