I’m a sucker for Vertigo OGNs so I kind of had to pick this book up.

I’ve never read anything by this author before, but this was fairly
decent. I liked how he set up the less than roaring thirties, though I
think there were a few bits of modern slang that slipped it’s way into
the dialog. I’m not too sure how much research he did, but it seems
like it was mostly surface as I swear the scene where he straightens
his hair was taken directly from Malcolm X.

The characters were interesting. I do think the best friend was a
complete idiot, but at least he was a noble idiot. The brother was a
jackass, but the at least the book acknowledged it. Zane was a great
main character, and I like how he came off as pretty sharp.

The plot was alright, but I think they telegraphed the twist about 5
pages into the second chapter. I do think that everyone got what they
deserved, which led to a truly satisfying conclusion. I upped this
rating a point because I really liked the last page. I do think the
ending was almost as broadcast as the twist, but, again, it was handled
well.

The art was okay. I’m not a huge Pleece fan, as I associate him with
the worst run on Hellblazer, but he did a decent job here. I’m going to
try to track down Deadenders because this book was solid visually.
There were a few places where it could have been gory for it’s own
sake, but he showed a good amount of restraint by keeping it to the
level it needed to be and not beyond.

All in all a good story, with a satisfactory ending.

Story: 4 - Very Good
