I Kill Giants is the story of a girl who has a big problem in her life, and constructs a vivid fantasy world around herself to protect herself.
From the very beginning, the little girl, Barbara, engages you, and a big reason is the evocative and skilled artwork of JM Ken Niimura. The book is in black and white, and Miimura has a style somewhere between Italy's Gepi ("Wish you were Here") and manga. Niimura is especially good in long shots of the town using a light yet bold pen and ink style; and also in expressing the moods and motions of the characters, where he mines his expertise with manga stylings. The result is a full, expressive piece of art that flows from the first page right through to the last.
The plot by Kelly is very tight, and rewards the reader by pulling things together at the end in a very believable manner. The use of
The book was also extremely touching in a few spots, it may be corny, but Kelly really shows us the beauty in friendship and family. His use of a sparse cast keeps the spotlight on Barbara and those closest to her, and you really feel for them all as Kelly spins his tale.
This book is a great example of how comics can be high art on a par with the other more accepted medias of literature and film.
