I KILL GIANTS #1 (OF 7)

The basic premise is reminiscent of “The Never Ending Story”, except not retarded.

A 5th grade girl with a snarky attitude and an affinity for “Dungeons & Dragons”  has constructed an elaborate fantasy identity for herself: A Killer of Giants.

It’s too early to tell, but the seeds have been planted for what may be an honest exploration of why people lose themselves in fantasy.

Is she simply playing make-believe? Is this “Giant Killer” a means to deal with her emerging self-image? Is there some truth to her fantasy?

All these questions are posed, and have the potential for thoughtful exploration. I’m intrigued. As comic-readers, we are well experienced in fantasy fiction. But the rise of the internet has established a culture of fabricated identities. We’ve become a people of avatars. I’m hoping this book gives some insight, if not simple exploration, of what happens when the line between Avatar and Identity is blurred.

The art is Manga-esque, but not the hyper-kinetic kind. The brush strokes are loose, but have a clarity in story-telling.

I’ll stick around. But if a giant flying dog shows up, I’m out.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 3 - Good
