Usually when a book has a tie-in to an event, I often find myself rolling my eyes and crossing my fingers that it will at least be serviceable from a story standpoint. This is even more true when it's an event I could care less about and that I'm not even reading. In Thunderbolts, Parker has been doing an excellent job of keeping along with his story points but also integrating his characters into Fear Itself without issue. In Hulk, he turns that up to 11. I typically try to avoid spoilers in my reviews, but this is just too goddamn awesome to not write about. One of the smartest things he does in this issue is that he pulls back from the Hulk, who's only in the book for about 5 panels, and instead he focuses on the brewing conflict between MODOK and Zero/One, which he's been hinting at the last few issues. Not only do we get to see this fight come to a head, but in the aftermath of that battle, we see an alliance form that is simply awesome. Brace yourselves for this bit of information folks: MODOK fights Nazis! That's right. You read correctly. In this book, MODOK leads a frontal assault on Sin's Nazi machines that are trying to destroy New York, and it is mad awesome. It's even awesomer when he saves civilians and they turn, thinking some great hero saved them, but instead, there's MODOK's fat face grinning at them. It's a very special thing. Elena Casagrane does a fantastic job on art. Her style mirrors Hardman's a bit, and the coloring and inking help with keeping the books look consistent with the tone first set by Parker and Hardman. You should do yourself a favor and pick this book up, if only to see MODOK gleefully killing Nazis. It's seriously the best thing to come out of Fear Itself.
